Hello everyone, and welcome to the first dev update of October! So I know a lot of you were looking forward to more progress, but as school gets busier, unfortunately Project YVR will be slowing down for a bit. I will still try my best to stick to the release plan, but I can't guarantee it will stay on schedule. I hope you understand.
Before I continue, I want to address something. Why YVR?
There are already 2 payware versions of the airport out there, why do we need a 3rd version of Vancouver's Airport? I want to give people the option to use a freeware version of YVR, for people who may not fly to Vancouver often and may want a nicer looking version of the airport, or maybe for people who don't want to spend as much on scenery addons. Project YVR is definitely not meant to replace payware models at all, but it's to give more options to simmers, for those who want a better Vancouver for free, and possibly even out of the box through the sim's gateway, once/if it becomes available for MSFS!
With that out of the way, here's the progress been made over the past 2 weeks:
Closed Alpha Signups
Signups are opening this month for Project YVR! Stay tuned for more details, and expect invites next month (November) or later. The signup will be posted on the Discord, so make sure you have joined that, there's a link on this website's home page.
Interior modelling/lighting
Project YVR Ultra will have interior modelling and lighting! I will try and make this as accurate as I can, although do note I have limited data available on the airside part of YVR, except from memory and some street view panoramas, so I will try my best to recreate it to a high degree of realism, but I also might add in some stuff to fill up the space that isn't there in real life. An example is this pizza restaurant!
Project YVR Ultra will also have individual lights throughout the terminal, giving a more realistic effect when looking into or around the terminal.
Project YVR Lite and Ultra
Project YVR has now been split into 2 versions: Lite and Ultra. Both are completely free, however they are aimed at different performance groups, so that Project YVR becomes more accessible to a variety of systems. Both will be similar, with Project YVR lite having less detailed models, and releasing earlier, since it's less complex. Project YVR Lite will also have glowing windows as night lighting instead of transparent glass with lights inside. Removing the lights alone from the terminal increases FPS by a lot, making it easier to run for lower end systems.
Development will be winding down
As I said in the introduction to this week's update, development of Project YVR will be winding down. I am going to be working an Android app for a school project over the next few months, and it happens that the project goes until February of next year. I will not be putting Project YVR's development on hold, but progress will become very slow over the next few months as I complete the app, however, hopefully I will be able to complete it early, and continue working on YVR. As a result, I will be temporarily removing any commitments to release dates for Project YVR, except the final v1.0 version, and I will also be posting dev updates when I have something substantial to show, not by a schedule, so make sure to join the Discord for notifications on when updates drop!
The roadmap page of the website has been temporarily disabled until I can make more substantial progress on this project.
I will try my absolute hardest to meet the deadlines I set when starting this project, but I want to make sure I am releasing a product that looks finished and represents YVR well, so I will not be rushing it. Thanks for your understanding, and have a great rest of your weekend!
