Ground Textures and Custom Gates

Updated: Sep 11, 2021

Hello, and welcome back to the third development update for Project YVR! I have a lot more stuff to show you this week, so let’s get straight into it!

Custom Gates

I have replaced some parts of the gates at Pier E with custom models. They remain untextured like most of the airport, but adding metal textures shouldn’t be too difficult ;) Although I’m not touching textures until I finish the whole model. Also, the animated part of the gate will remain default, unless I find a way to animate a Blender model of a gate and import it into the sim as a gate. Or, if possible, maybe just change the color of the animated part to match the rest of the gate.

Ground Textures

One of the most notable changes is the black outline around taxiway lines. This really makes the airport feel more accurate. Please note that this may cause issues for people with taxiway mods to add black outlines around taxiway centerlines, however, for people playing without these, the airport will look much better. Taxiway, apron, and runway textures have also been tweaked to more accurately depict the real airport. All of these ground texture changes have been made only using the default textures in the SDK too!

New Gate Numbers Some gate numbers have been updated to match the current gate numbers at YVR, as some were changed because of the Pier D expansion. Also, you can now spawn at all the new gates from the Pier D Expansion! What About Performance? So, with all these new additions to the airport, there must be some performance cost, right? From my initial testing with the current build, which I’d say is about halfway done, there is about a 3.5% performance dip versus default. Of course, default isn’t detailed at all, however, this should give you an idea about how Project YVR should run on your system. Expect a 5-10% performance decrease at least from default, as no detail is spared in the model. Every detail in the window is hand modelled, so it depicts the windows at YVR extremely accurately, although thankfully not at a big performance cost.

Thanks for Reading! And that’s all I have to show you for now! I’ll also now be doing only biweekly updates, since I want to make sure that there is enough content for each update. Also, you can view the updated roadmap on the 'roadmap' page. A pre-alpha version of the airport has been released to select closed alpha testers. For a chance to test the project early before it goes public, please join the Discord! While no new applicants are currently being accepted for closed alpha, there will be a signup at a later stage for more testers, likely closer to the v0.4 launch 👀 Next Update: September 17th Discord: https://bit.ly/projectyvrdiscord
